Introduction

These tender turkey meatballs are coated in a colorful sweet chili sauce made with fresh dragonfruit, lime, garlic, and ginger. The mild turkey provides a savory foundation, while dragonfruit adds tropical color and gentle sweetness. This versatile dish works equally well for a family dinner or as a party appetizer.

Ingredients

For the Meatballs

– 1 pound ground turkey
– 1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs
– 1 large egg
– 2 tablespoons finely minced green onion
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 tablespoon soy sauce
– 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
– 1/2 teaspoon salt
– 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
– 1 tablespoon neutral cooking oil

For the Dragonfruit Sweet Chili Sauce

– 1 cup peeled, diced red-fleshed dragonfruit
– 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
– 2 tablespoons soy sauce
– 1 tablespoon honey
– 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
– 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
– 1 clove garlic, minced
– 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
– 1 teaspoon cornstarch
– 1 tablespoon cold water

For Garnish

– 2 tablespoons sliced green onions
– 1 teaspoon sesame seeds
– 1 teaspoon lime zest

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven. Set the oven to 400°F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.

2. Mix the meatball ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the ground turkey, breadcrumbs, egg, green onion, garlic, soy sauce, ginger, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until just combined.

3. Shape the meatballs. Form the mixture into approximately 16 meatballs, each about 1 1/2 inches in diameter.

4. Prepare the baking sheet. Arrange the meatballs on the prepared sheet with space between them. Lightly brush or drizzle them with the cooking oil.

5. Bake the meatballs. Bake for approximately 15–20 minutes, turning once if needed, until the center of each meatball reaches 165°F.

6. Make the dragonfruit sauce. While the meatballs bake, combine the dragonfruit, sweet chili sauce, soy sauce, honey, lime juice, rice vinegar, garlic, and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan.

7. Simmer the sauce. Cook over medium-low heat for 7–9 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the dragonfruit softens.

8. Blend the sauce. Blend until smooth, or mash the fruit thoroughly if you prefer a slightly textured sauce.

9. Thicken the sauce. Mix the cornstarch with the cold water. Stir it into the sauce and simmer for 1–2 minutes until glossy.

10. Coat the meatballs. Transfer the fully cooked meatballs to a clean skillet or saucepan. Pour the dragonfruit sauce over them and gently toss to coat.

11. Heat together. Simmer gently for 2 minutes, stirring carefully so the meatballs remain intact.

12. Garnish and serve. Sprinkle with sliced green onions, sesame seeds, and lime zest.

Serving Suggestions

Serve over steamed jasmine rice with broccoli, snap peas, bok choy, or stir-fried vegetables. For appetizers, serve the meatballs on a platter with toothpicks and extra sauce on the side.

Recipe Tips

– Leave out the red pepper flakes for a milder sauce.
– Add 1 teaspoon of sriracha if you prefer more heat.
– Avoid overmixing the turkey mixture, which can make the meatballs dense.
– Red-fleshed dragonfruit creates a beautiful pink-red sauce.

Why Dragonfruit Works

Dragonfruit adds color, mild sweetness, and body to the sweet chili sauce. Lime and rice vinegar provide acidity, while garlic and ginger contribute savory depth. The result is a tropical twist on familiar turkey meatballs.
